Fish Curry
South Indian cuisine includes the recipes of
the five southern states of India: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil
Nadu and Telangana. This South Indian fish curry recipe, also called meen
kulambu, is a delicately-flavored dish that can be served with idli (a savory
cake) or dosa (a type of fermented batter pancake).

Preparation time: 15 min
Serves – 4
Ingredients:
700 gms Small fish ( I used Tilapia )
4-5 tbsp vegetable oil
½ tsp mustard seeds
½ tsp jeera/cumin seeds
1 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
1 large tomato (chopped fine)
1 tablespoon garlic paste
2 medium onion; finely chopped
2 curry leaves
1 tsp turmeric powder
3 tsp red chilli powder
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
Salt, to season
2 tsp coriander powder
70-80ml tamarind juice
Method:
ü Clean
the fish, cut into medium sized slices and keep aside.
ü Heat
oil in a large pan and crackle the mustard seeds.
ü Then
add the cumin seeds, followed by chopped onions and curry leaves. Saute for 2
minutes on medium heat.
ü Then
add half of the coriander leaves and ginger garlic paste. Saute for another 2
minutes and then add turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder.
ü Add
the tamarind juice
ü Add
the fish pieces, season with salt and mix well.
ü Mix
well and add ½ cup water. (Add more water if you prefer a thinner gravy).
ü Cook
on high for 5 minutes and then cook covered on low heat till the fish pieces
are done.
ü Finish
by adding the remainder of the coriander leaves
ü Turn
off heat and serve South Indian fish curry on top of plain boiled rice.
